We’re proud to announce that Dopplium, in collaboration with TU Delft, has received a Take-off Phase 1 grant from NWO (Dutch Research Council) to advance the development of BatGuardian, a radar-based system that helps wind farms reduce bat mortality and energy loss caused by unnecessary turbine shutdowns.

BatGuardian leverages millimeter-wave radar to detect bats in real time, enabling turbines to shut down only when needed. The system addresses a major challenge in the wind energy sector: balancing biodiversity protection with operational efficiency. With over 30% of European wind turbines affected by bat-related curtailment regulations, this solution represents a critical step toward smarter, greener wind power.

The project builds on years of scientific research conducted at the Microwave Sensing, Signals & Systems (MS3) group at Delft University of Technology, in close collaboration with Dr. Francesco Fioranelli, Associate Professor in the MS3 group.
